Definitions do change over time and can prove to be quite dynamic over the course of many centuries. However, what I find problematic in the case of the term ‘humanism’ is that the way it is used by Pinker and the New Atheists has little to nothing to do with the deep, transformative nature of the term as employed by generations of humanists in Renaissance Europe. There is a term for what Pinker and the New Atheists are describing — in part, at least, it is scientism.
